NNOM Criteria For Selection

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

(a) The Governing Board is usually guided by the following criteria:

Selection is made from a wide range of contemporary works, which are innovative, creative, and essentially Nigerian in content and of national and international distinction;

Such contribution should also constitute a major breakthrough in any field or alternatively be a significant but cumulative work of notable achievement(s);

The award also emphasizes distinct merit and upright morality.

(b) Between 1979 and 2006, (i.e. about twenty – seven years of its existence) several thousands of applications for the award of the NNOM were received. Only fifty (57) distinguished Nigerians have been honored with this prestigious Award. This, of course, could be attributed to the rigorous and transparent mechanism involved in processing the nominations of candidates, the key element of which is peer review.

The selection process is as follows:

Call for nominations;
Receipt of nominations from the general public;
Collation of nominations by the Secretariat;
Screening of nomination Specialized Committees of Assessors and the Committee of Chairmen;
Assessment and consideration of nominees by respective Specialized Committee of Assessors;
Recommendations from the Specialized Committees of Assessors presented to the Committee of Chairmen for consideration;
Consideration and approval of recommendations from the Committee of Chairmen by the Governing Board;
Presentation of the awardees selected by the Board to Mr. President for the confernment of the NNOM Award;
Investiture of the laureates by Mr. President.
